The Serenity workstation is designed as real-world solution for those who find themselves at a desk all day while facing the challenges of lower back pain and/or blood circulatory issues.
The lower back, where most back pain occurs, includes the five vertebrae in the lumbar region. These support much of the weight of the upper body.
Most lower back pain is mechanical in nature, meaning that there is a disruption in the way the components of the back (the spine, muscle, intervertebral discs, and nerves) fit together and move. Thirty-one pairs of nerves are rooted to the spinal cord so diagnosing the source of one’s lower back pain can be complicated.
A known enemy of most chronic lower back pain is constant weight/gravity acting on the spinal discs as experienced by sitting for long periods of time. This poses a very real challenge for those who’s livelihood requires sitting at a desk all day.
Standing desks provide some spinal relief through constant small movements of the legs and feet but they have the disadvantage of greatly reduced concentration while standing. A further disadvantage of standing all day is felt by those who suffer from swollen ankles and/or varicose veins. Prolonged standing could open the door to conditions like chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) or even Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT).
Working while lying down is a further option for spinal relief but working in this position leads to drowsiness and ultimately low productivity.
The Serenity workstation addresses these two problems of spinal compression and blood circulation while seated at a desk. Inclining the workstation back to 45 degrees effectively cuts the gravitational loading on the spine by 50% by changing the loading vector on the body. This means the weight of one’s upper body is shared by the spine, back and head instead of only through the spine as in the conventional seating position. Furthermore, in full recline position, the legs are kept level and thus in the optimal position for effective blood circulation of the legs and ankles.
